I have always had a love for big homes and beautiful architectural details. I remember visiting my aunt and uncle in Northern California and asking to drive by the gorgeous homes, imagining their pristine interiors. And touring inside the Newport, RI mansions, taking in the vast height of the ceilings and admiring the reflection of the ocean bouncing off the windows.
Fast forward 15 years and I was living in Charleston, SC where, in my opinion, the most gorgeous homes reside. It’s no secret that this northern girl admires the southern charm and etiquette the south brings. My husband and I loved running on Rainbow Row and down by the Battery to take in the breathtaking surroundings. The side piazzas, strategically placed to catch the afternoon ocean breeze in the brutal summer heat. Or the blue painted porch ceilings to ward off evil spirits (and bugs). Between the gas lanterns, brightly painted doors and perfectly manicured boxwoods, the details within the Charleston cobblestone streets are incredible.
After spending my life admiring these finer qualities, I turned that into my career. This is how I decided to begin my design journey. Now it’s my job (and continues to be my hobby) to figure out exactly which details make a difference in designing clients’ homes. I’ve gathered some of my all-time favorite details that every home should consider.
Greenery – Every room should have a little life.
Ceilings – Think of it as your 5th wall. Paint them. Wallpaper them. Add intricate trim or beams. No space should be neglected of the details.
Trim – It doesn’t all have to be white…
Lighting - This can set the entire tone of the room. Make a statement.
Detailed Front Doors – Whether intricate wood carvings, finished in a high gloss paint or a really fun door knocker, do something with it. After all, it's your home's first impression.
