When it comes to designing your home, there are things you should never skimp on, such as bedding, sofas and area rugs. However, for the rest of the design, there are ways you can make a statement without breaking the bank. Here are some of my favorite, big impact design updates that don't cost an arm and a leg.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, lighting makes a huge difference! I try and steer clients away from the generic fixtures at your local hardware store, and instead search around online or at local design boutiques. Inexpensive, yet attractive lighting does exist!
When it comes to art, order prints! Etsy and Minted are two of my favorite go-tos.
Layer art! You can even frame a small object you've been holding onto, or a seashell you picked up on your last beach trip. Get creative and hang the frame in an unexpected place. Maybe on the molding, rather than the empty wall space. Or create a gallery wall with overlapping frames. Your attention to detail and creativity won't go unnoticed.
Swap the pillows out every few months to keep your sofa looking fresh. If you're having company come and stay with you, update the guest bedroom pillows as well! Neutral bedding will really help with this.
When in doubt, use a book for decor. I put them under lamps, stacked next to a sofa and pretty much on every table. Buy books at a used book store or cover old textbooks with paper to save on cost. They're a great way to add layering and height.
Rotate decor items around your house. Nothing in my own house has yet to find its permanent home. I am constantly moving a vase to the bedroom or a piece of art to the living room. You may find that your house doesn't need any new items in it at all, you just needed to give a few things a new home!
Change the room layout. It's free and can definitely help you feel like you've made a big change.
