Party Prep

I love a good party, and I really love a well-decorated party. You should always set the table as interesting as the people who will sit at it. Here are my table setting tips to impress your friends at your next bbq.

Placemats - I have a weird obsession with placemats. They are the perfect table accessory because they serve a purpose and look fabulous. You won't get any spills or stains on your beautiful table all while adding an extra layer and dimension to the table setting. Remember to think about the shape of the placemat and how it will fit. Rectangular placemats rarely work on round tables.

Napkins - The life of the party! This is your opportunity to add style, color, shape and contrast. And of course another layer! It's all about layering. Combine it with a fun tablecloth to add major impact.

Napkin Rings - Your napkin's necklace. How often do you show up at a party without jewelry on? It's the finishing touch to add a little extra something to the table. It's also a way to add a different texture. Try using a straw placemat with a seashell napkin ring. Or a cork placemat with a metal holder. Get creative. It doesn't have to be store-bought. Show off what you learned on Pinterest. Tie a ribbon around it. But dress that napkin up!

Flatware - Think of this as setting the tone for the party. Is it casual or elegant? Beachy or rustic? Everyone will notice it because they have to pick it up to eat! If you don't want to buy all new flatware, that's totally fine! Just buy a few new sets and mix it in with ones that you already own.

Glassware - Mix and match! Use different colors, styles, and heights. Glassware can really help bring interest to the table by adding a splash of color and variations in height. Consider what people will be drinking. I like to always have a water cup in addition to their adult beverage.

Decor - Now that you have your table set, fill in the middle! I personally prefer a table set with flowers and decor down the center and food set off to the side on a buffet. This way you have more room for decor and pretty things. Your decor is where you can incorporate a theme or just show your aesthetic. Use objects from around your house; stuff pitchers and gravy boats with flowers; or fill a bowl with tangerines. Make sure your table is full of contrast, color, texture and layers. Then fill it with good company and laughter. Bon Appétit!
